UEFA Europa League: Man United handed Mourinho reunion; Spurs visit

[ad_1]

Man United have been handed a trip to face former boss Jose Mourinho’s new club Fenerbahce in the new-look UEFA Europa League.

Rangers were also handed a trip to Old Trafford in Friday afternoon’s draw in Monaco, while Erik ten Hag’s side will also host Twente Enschede, the club where he began his playing career, going on to have three spells at the club and playing more than 200 league games.

Tottenham have been given an away game at Ibrox, a ground boss Ange Postecoglou knows only too well from his time at Celtic.

As with the Champions League, for the first time this season all the qualifiers will be in one 36-team league phase, rather than eight four-team group.

At Friday afternoon’s draw in Monaco a new computer software was used to give each team four home games and four away ties.

The top-eight sides in the table after the initial phase ends in late January go straight into the last-16, with the sides finishing 9th to 24th facing a two-legged knockout tie to join them.

The teams in 25th to 36th will be eliminated from European competition entirely, with no sides dropping into the Europa League.
