Sampdoria sack Pirlo after slow start

Sampdoria have sacked coach Andrea Pirlo following a slow start to the new Serie B season.
Samp are second bottom having taken just one point from their opening three games, a draw with Frosinone followed by defeats to Reggiana and Salternitana.
A club statement read: “U.C. Sampdoria announces that it has relieved Andrea Pirlo from the position of coach responsible for the first team.
“The technician and his staff members – Roberto Baronio, Mauro Bertoni, Nicola Pavarini and Raffaele Clemente – are thanked for the commitment and professionalism shown during their time at the club.”
Pirlo took over in June 2023 with the brief to take the Genoa club back to the top flight. They could only manage a seventh-placed finish last term, however, meaning a strong start this season was essential.
The 45-year-old won the Coppa Italia in his one season in charge of Juventus followed by a disappointing spell at Turkish side Fatih Karagumruk.
