Match Preview

It’s fair to say defending La Liga champions and Champions League winners Real Madrid have failed to shine in their opening games of the new campaign.

Signing Kylian Mbappe was a statement of intent but he has failed to register a goal involvement in his first three La Liga appearances for Los Meringues.

Madrid drew their opening game at Mallorca and their third game at Las Palmas on Thursday, both 1-1, though they did beat Real Valladolid 3-0 at home inbetween the two

Carlo Ancelotti’s side host Real Betis (8.30pm BST kick-off) looking to extend a 35-match unbeaten run in the league, a streak which included a 0-0 draw at home to Betis in May.

They also drew 1-1 on the road at Betis last season and the stubborn Seville side have also drawn both their La Liga games this term, against Girona and Alaves, though they did see-off Kryvbas 2-0 and 3-0 to progress to the league stage of the UEFA Conference League this week.

You’d expect Madrid to have too much back on the mainland and in familiar surroundings, but Betis have proved a thorn in their side and would like nothing more than to add further frustration to a Madrid side still missing the injured Jude Bellingham.

Mbappe will fire at some point, surely, but still the 9/2 available on another draw has to be respected.
