If the EC has nothing to hide, it should permit the documentation of serial numbers

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is advocating for increased accountability in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise. They are urging the Electoral Commission (EC) to allow its agents to record the serial numbers of the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits.

This demand follows reports of missing BVR kits at the EC headquarters. While the EC cites security concerns, NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah argues that transparency is crucial.

At a press conference held today, May 9, 2024, the National Chairman of the NDC emphasized that the 2024 elections will not be business as usual.

“The EC must step up and address the 35 questions posed by the NDC regarding the stolen biometric equipment. The EC has no choice but to allow our agents to record the serial numbers of the Biometric Voter Registration kits used in this registration exercise.”

He asserted that enhancing transparency not only benefits stakeholders but also strengthens the credibility of the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

He called on the Ghanaian populace, particularly civil society organizations, chiefs, and faith-based leaders, to join the NDC in demanding more transparency and fairness, which are essential for peaceful elections.

“Anyone interested in peaceful elections must advocate for transparency and fairness in the electoral process.”

He added that ignoring injustice and expecting those treated unfairly to ensure peace for the country is unrealistic.

“We refuse to be passive victims of peace. To achieve peace, we must first ensure fairness. If there is fairness, everyone will feel secure and comfortable.”
