Ghana Now a Destination for International Sports Events – Mustapha Ussif
The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has announced that hosting the 2023 African Games has significantly enhanced Ghana’s reputation among African nations.
Addressing Parliament on Tuesday to report on the African Games, Mustapha Ussif highlighted the government’s investment in sports infrastructure, which has made Ghana a preferred destination for international sports events.
“Ghana is now a destination of choice for international sports events, following the world-class facilities the government invested in for the Games,” the Minister stated.
He emphasized the exceptional facilities at Borteyman, particularly the Aquatic Centre, which is unique in Africa. This investment has positioned Ghana as a prime location for hosting international competitions and tournaments.
“We have already received requests from international sports bodies seeking to host events in Ghana. For example, the Commonwealth has been in contact, wanting Ghana to host the Commonwealth Youth Games,” Ussif added.
He also noted that a recent international athletics championship was held in Ghana, and due to the excellent facilities, Ghana has won the bid to host the 2026 African Athletics Championship.
“These are the legacies of hosting the African Games. The benefits are enormous, and it has propelled our country high among leading African nations with the best sports infrastructure. This is what President Akufo-Addo envisioned for the country.”
The Sports Minister also outlined measures to maintain the facilities. He revealed that the facilities at the University of Ghana will be handed over to the University of Ghana, while the Borteyman Complex will be transformed into a University for Sports Development. Additionally, the Ministry is considering a proposal from the private sector to manage the facility. In the meantime, the facility has been handed over to the National Sports Authority for immediate management.
