ChaLoG Supports NDC’s Push for Forensic Audit of Voters’ Register Ahead of 2024 Elections

The Chamber for Local Governance (ChaLoG) has thrown its support behind the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in its demand for a forensic audit of the 2024 voters’ register. This comes after the Electoral Commission (EC) acknowledged some discrepancies in the register that were previously dismissed. ChaLoG stresses that a transparent audit is crucial for ensuring trust in the electoral process and avoiding future political tension. The organization also urged the public to back peaceful protests advocating for electoral integrity.

The NDC’s concerns stem from what they describe as glaring irregularities in the current voters’ register, which they fear could undermine the credibility of the upcoming elections. ChaLoG, as a body advocating for good governance at the local level, highlighted the importance of addressing these concerns to maintain confidence in Ghana’s democratic processes. They argued that a forensic audit would ensure that the voters’ register is accurate, free from manipulation, and representative of the electorate’s will.

Moreover, ChaLoG’s support of the NDC’s position marks a significant step in rallying civil society groups to push for greater transparency from the Electoral Commission. The group believes that an independent audit is necessary to avert any potential post-election disputes and strengthen Ghana’s democratic institutions.

By joining forces with the NDC, ChaLoG also called for a united front among Ghanaians to advocate for electoral reforms. They urged citizens to remain vigilant and to participate in any future demonstrations that seek to hold the EC accountable.

The Electoral Commission, while admitting to some minor discrepancies, has yet to agree to the NDC’s request for a forensic audit. However, with growing pressure from both political parties and civil society organizations like ChaLoG, the push for electoral transparency may continue to gain momentum in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.
