Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has expressed strong confidence in the newly inaugurated Governing Board of the Ghana Sports Fund, saying its members have what it takes to transform sports financing and development in the country.
The Minister made the remarks after swearing in the board at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, describing the moment as a historic turning point for Ghanaian sports.
According to Kofi Adams, the board’s diverse composition and expertise position it well to effectively implement the Ghana Sports Fund Act (Act 1159) and ensure sustainable, transparent funding for sports development.
The Sports Minister noted that the establishment of the Fund is the culmination of years of advocacy, policy discussions and legislative work, backed by firm political will under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.
He explained that the process began with a Cabinet Memorandum from the Ministry, followed by parliamentary approval and presidential assent, stressing that the inauguration of the board demonstrates government’s commitment to treating sports as a key pillar of national development.
The Ghana Sports Fund is expected to mobilise and manage resources for athlete development, grassroots sports, infrastructure, capacity building and high-performance preparation, addressing decades of inconsistent and reactive funding in the sector.
However, the Minister cautioned that funding alone would not be enough, placing significant responsibility on the Governing Board to uphold the principles of fairness, transparency and strategic governance.
Kofi Adams also called on sports federations to embrace structured planning and accountability, noting that the success of the Fund would depend on clear programmes, measurable outcomes and professionalism across the sports ecosystem.
He concluded by congratulating the board members and reaffirming government’s commitment to supporting a sports financing system that serves athletes, communities and Ghana’s long-term sporting ambitions.
