Former Speaker of Parliament and founding Member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, has called on all presidential aspirants to exhibit honourable conduct in the upcoming flagbearer contest to protect the party’s traditions and honour its founding fathers.

During the signing of the Peace Pact in Accra on Thursday, January 22, the former Speaker underscored the need to promote fairness, unity anmd respect as the party prepares to elect its flagbearer come January 31, 2026.

According to him, the party’s enviable values must be preserved throughout the process. “Please do something honourable for the New Patriotic Party and our tradition,” he said.

He added that signing the peace pact is necessary, as past experiences of unfair practices, partiality, and extreme partisanship within the party had negatively affected unity.

“In saying this, I am mindful that unfair practices, partiality, and base partisanship happened in our party, which have destroyed or shaken our unity”, he added.

The NPP Presidential primary, which is scheduled for January 31, 2026, will be fiercely contested by former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Ken Ohene Agyapong; former Minister of Food and Agriculture and MP for Abetifi, Dr Byran Acheampong; former Vice-President and 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; former Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.

The peace pact will commit all five aspirants to pledge unity and accept the processes and outcome of the elections, and also ensure that supporters of the candidates do not cause any mayhem and compromise the unity of the party.
